Wellington ordered a signalling system to be built as part of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Following consultation with Admiral Berkeley, a complex five balloon system was developed based on naval signalling and using a modified version of Admiral Home Popham's signalling code book.
Fransisco Ciera was a Portuguese Engineer who developed three simple telegraph systems that were used during and after the Peninsular War. In 1810, the Portuguese army formed the Corpo Telegrafico who maintained the permanent communications between Almeida, Lisbon and Elvas. |
