I am now working to complete the editing of the Machell letters. He served briefly in the later stages of the Peninsular War, losing his life at the siege of San Sebastian. Machell served under Charles William Pasley in the UK. Pasley was formulating his ideas on the training of officers and Sappers and Machell wrote on this process that led to the formation of the School of Military Engineering.
